When do we need Marriage Counselling ?

Click here to watch a short video that can help you figure out when you may need Couples or Marriage Counselling. Generally speaking most marriages have their ups and downs and couples tend to find positive and creative ways of problem solving in their marriage. Nonetheless, over time most marriage relationships will face challenges that add stress to the relationship above comfortable levels. Sometimes events outside or inside the marriage increase the stress significantly and test the ability of the couple to cope and move forward. When they are not moving forward couples often report feeling "stuck". It seems like no matter what the issue or topic is - the same unsatisfying outcome is arrived at - one indiivdual or both individuals feel deeply dissatisfied or hurt. If the root, or cause, of the problem remains unaddressed, marriage counselling or couples counselling may be required.

How often do we come for marriage counselling?

You can expect to come for 1.5 hour sessions on a weekly basis for about 10 - 20 weeks. This recommended time frame is the basic rule of thumb in order to achieve long lasting improvements. However, depending on your goals and unique situation a shorter or longer time frame may be required.

What can we expect from marriage counselling?

There are many therapy techniques that marriage counsellors and therapists use. My method is based on a well established method called Emotional Focused Therapy (EFT) developed in Canada by two leading Canadian Psychotherapists, Dr. Lesley Greenberg (York University) and Dr. Susan Johnson (University of Ottawa). EFT has been validated in many scientific studies and is well known and respected by health professionals and therapists. I have trained with both Dr. Greenberg and Dr. Johnson and have earned a certificate in EFT for couples. The EFT marriage counselling method helps to re-establish the emotional connection that you have had with your partner in the past, or by improving the connection you have by identifying patterns in your communication cycle that are unhelpful. I will help you figure out how to re-connect with new productive communication patterns.

"EFT a proven road map to the process of change in couple therapy" John Gottman, Ph.D, bestselling author of The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work

"EFT one of the best documented, most substantive and well researched approaches to couple therapy." Alan S. Gurman, Ph.D

"EFT has achieved an astounding 75 percent success rate. Results are lasting!" American Psychological Association

What is Marriage Counselling?

Marriage counselling is the term used by the general public to describe counselling for marriage problems. Other terms have been used interchangably such as Couples Counselling, Couples Therapy, Marital Therapy, Marriage Therapy, Family Therapy, Relationship Counselling, and Relationship Therapy. As society has changed and evolved over time the term marriage counselling now includes providing counselling to anyone who is in a committed relationship. The legal status of the relationship does not matter so much to the helping professional. What matters is the meaning the individuals attribute to the relationship and the couples desire to improve the health of their marriagerelationship. For the Counsellor or Therapist, the couple could be in a variety of relationship configurations. These variations could include dating, living together, common law, same sex relationship, engaged, married, divorced or separated.
